The lessons · lesson 9 of 11

Winning and paying

How you win, who pays what, and what happens when the wall runs out.

  1. How you win

The card lists the hands that win, and the number beside each hand is what it pays. When your fourteen tiles make one of those hands, you win. Here you need one more 6 Bam. When it comes, say Mah Jongg, and lay your tiles face up for everyone to check.

  2. Is this a win?

The hand on the card is FF 2222 4444 6666 in one suit.

Which rack wins with that hand? Yes. 14 tiles in one suit, the joker standing in for a 4 Dot.

  3. Who pays what

This hand pays 25. If you win on a tile someone throws, the player who threw it pays double, 50. The other two pay 25 each. You collect 100. If you draw the winning tile yourself, all three pay double, 50 each. You collect 150. And if your hand has no jokers in it, every payment doubles again.

  4. What does each player pay?

Your hand pays 30, and it has a joker in it. You win on a tile the player across threw.

Who pays what? Yes. The thrower pays double, the others pay the value.

  5. When the wall runs out

Sometimes the wall runs out before anyone wins. That is a wall game. Nobody pays, and the tiles are mixed for the next game.
