American Mah Jongg practice drills

One question at a time from a real rack: which tile to throw, which hand your tiles are closest to, which three to pass. You get the answer the moment you choose, with a line on why.

Start drilling The placement test

What would you discard?

A rack from a real game, at the moment a tile had to go. Choose your throw, and the Coach shows the tile it would have thrown and why.

Try it

Which hand do these tiles make?

A rack of tiles and the card. Name the hand they are closest to, and you see at once which hand they make.

Try it

Can you make this hand?

A hand as the card prints it. Build it from the tiles, all fourteen, and it is checked exactly as a winning hand is at the table.

Try it

What would you pass?

Thirteen tiles, just dealt. Choose the three to pass, and see what a strong player would have sent instead.

Try it

Three minutes, three strikes

Name as many hands from the card as you can in three minutes. Three wrong answers and the game is over. Try to beat your best.

How a drill is scored

Every answer is checked by the Coach, and the page tells you why in one line. Your score over time is on your account page.

Questions

How can I practise American Mah Jongg by myself?
Two ways at Mahjongg School, both free and without an account: drills, which ask one decision at a time and score each answer the moment you give it, and the table, where you play whole games against three computer opponents.
What do the drills practise?
The decisions a game is made of: which tile to throw, which hand on the card your tiles are closest to, how to build a hand the card prints from the tiles, and which three tiles to pass in the Charleston.
Is it free?
Yes. Ten drill answers a day are free without an account. A free account gives you twenty-five a day and keeps your scores, and a member plan removes the daily limit.
Can I practise with the National Mah Jongg League card?
Yes, if you own the printed card for that year: the drills and the table ask once, and then play it. Everyone can practise on the school's own card, free.
